stock up saturday: just a coupla things

Ran around for a bit this weekend and found just a few things. Left several places empty handed, which is disappointing and satisfying at the same time. I've been on a listing frenzy lately, and now actually feel "caught up." So, now it feels good to be able to take my time, be selective, enjoy the process, and take time to learn as much as possible.

On a personal note, may I brag? Hubs took the 7 year old skiing today up in Summit County and he did amazing. In the past, the equipment has been a bit overwhelming for the boy, so ski days had been slightly frustrating...up and down the little bunny hill for a while 'till exhaustion kicked in. Today, it clicked for him. Thought they'd last just a couple of hours; they ended up staying all day. He ended up wanting to go up the "big lifts" and ski dowwwwwwwwn the long runs. No time for this up and down the bunny hill stuff. Sweet. In the little videos, despite being bundled from helmet to goggles to boots, I could just see his happiness and excitement. Now they're home, hungry and red-cheeked. Think I'm proud? You should see his dad.

OK, on to the finds:

Yes, I already have some similar, Yugoslavian, versions of these in the shop.
After hemming and hawing, I finally decided to grab these because of their matte undersides... I thought
perhaps Krenit by Herbert Krenchel of Denmark. No real proof that they are unfortunately,
but they're so nice and have great style. Listed here.

This Kolf of Austria fabric has such a cute folksy design to it. I recently sold some Kolf linens, I think they are so fun although I don't know anything about the company. This is a nice large piece, in crispy clean, never-been-washed condition. Vintage fabrics are still so intriguing to me. I have ridiculous amounts of fabric, waiting to be used.
One of these days I'll do a sewing post! This will be listed as soon as I get it measured.

Sometimes I just can't resist the Japanese stoneware. There's a lot of it out there, that's for sure.
Something about these fluttering butterflies caught my eye.

Finally, this is a rare Corning Ware 10" skillet. It coordinates with the classic Cornflower Blue pattern, but it is that beautiful solid blue with a white interior, and nice black and stainless handle. I've only been able to find one listed on Ebay, and nowhere else. I'd like to list it in the shop, but hubs think he might like to cook eggs in it. We'll see.

stock up saturday: fantastic plastic

I told myself to take a break from shopping until I list the items listed that are sitting on my "to list" shelf. But, hubs twisted my arm and sent me on my way this morning... Mind you, this gives him an excuse to plop in front of the TV watching Euro soccer highlights while the kids play. And now as I research, photograph, and list...he's enjoying his Liverpool match. It's all very symbiotic around here. We are very lucky to have super self-entertaining children! (Cheers to Montessori.) Don't worry, we do engage with them from time to time.

I've mentioned this before in my posts, but I think it's funny how many of my treasure hunting runs end up with things that kind of "go" together. So, here are some of today's plasticky pick ups:

Soehnle of Switzerland scale.
Can take up to 11 pounds (5 kg) and does it with style. Have to do a bit of research to
determine age. If its 20+ years old, it'll go in the shop. If not, it'll stay right here with me!

I feel like I remember my Twitter friends a while back chatting about Ingrid plastics, but can't remember the specifics. Definitely in the style of the popular plastic Heller pieces, but based in Chicago. This is a "picnic ball." A large set of 6 cups, 6 dinner plates, 6 medium plates/shallow bowls, 6 small bowls/plates, 6 tumblers, a serving platter, and two serving bowls. Put it all together in just the right way, and you have THIS:

Kind of brilliant, huh?
My 7 year old thinks this is just about the coolest thing he's ever seen and
would like it to come along with us on our summer camping trips... We'll see.

And speaking of Ingrid, at a completely different shop I found this little snack set of four plates and four short cups in its original mesh packaging. The plates have little indentations for the cups to sit in. The plastic Heller pieces I have in the shop haven't been selling, but I thought I'd grab this and give it a try since the packaging is pretty eye catching!

Not much to say about it except that I just had to pick it up because it was made by
"Rogers" (my dad's name) in Madison,WI ( my hometown, where my parents still live.)
So retro, huh?!

Interdesigns swivel storage/sorter.
I was happy to see this since I recently listed one that sold in just a few days.
The last one was white, but I'm loving this blue.

And last, but not least, yet another Kokeshi. I'm crazy!
This one is a bit older, in the "traditional" style. You can see my others in the background...
Suddenly I'm a collector. I just can't part with them! I have much to learn, and there's lots of information out there. Maybe a future blog post. For now, it's a magical little "rush" when I see one calmly standing there
waiting for me on a crowded shelf. See, I'm crazy.

Now on to the task of listing, listing, listing...have lots of other cute stuff (not all plastic) to get in the shop before the work week starts again. Enjoy!

Lots of retro holiday goodness this week! It really gets me in the mood to decorate for our Christmas...or maybe next week. ;)

Instead of the group shot, I'm trying out the individual shots of some of my favorite finds:

stock up saturday: feeling thankful but missing Marshall Field's

Went to five different spots yesterday and walked out of several empty-handed. Determined to stock up as much as possible before "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday" and all of that jazz... So grateful for a week off of school to do this before the relatives come!

Speaking of which, here I am exposing the elementary teacher side of myself...this is a hilarious children's book that is a good gift for young and old: The Relatives Came, by Cynthia Rylant. If any of you have family get-togethers where people end up sleeping all over the house, listening to each other snoring and such, and enjoying the crowded-ness of such gatherings, you might get a chuckle from this book. Makes me laugh every time and I enjoy reading it around the holidays.

On to the haul:

This milk glass bowl is so beautiful with its bluish tinge and swirls. Anyone have an ID for this?

Took a week off as the rest of my life took over for a bit. It was actually nice to have a break, and made getting back to it all the sweeter. Not a huge haul this week, but some fun stuff nonetheless...some of which will stay right here with me.

I love the warm feel of these items. And here they are:
- Landert Fondue Pot (From Switzerland, meant to go from oven to table. Just love those swirls.)
- Modern Wooden Bird Bowl (It's a shallow bowl with a really cool, mod shape. Already listed if you want to check it out.)
- Hyalyn Pink Rectangular Console Dish (Beautiful condition, buttery glaze...kind of hiding in the back there.)
- Pottery Craft Vase (The other Pottery Craft I have is not selling super well, but this was kind of different from some I've found and in such good condition, I grabbed it.)
- Two Brass/Copper Angel Candle Holders (Made in Hong Kong, they're kind of a common item, but I really think they're pretty so I'll add them to my own Christmas decorations.)
- Two Arabia Kosmos Bread and Butter Plates (Hiding under those angels.)
- Coral Glossy El Patio by Franciscan/Gladding Mc Bean Gravy Boat (El Patio was the first dinnerware produced by California based Gladding McBean and the very first line to carry the Franciscan name.)
- And finally, I'd like to introduce you to... Well, I don't know who he is, but something about him made me pay too much to bring him home. The more I look at him, the more I love him and I sure do want to know where he is going, what he is carrying, why he's not wearing any shoes, and what he so unhappy about. He's looking at me right now while I'm typing this. Check him out:

I haven't found anything out about him, so if any of you have any insights, I'd sure love to hear them. Chances are, he's just another 1970s wood carving, but there's something about him that really caught my eye.

stock up saturday: worth a second trip

Got up early and headed out on my own only to find a few not-so-great things. Then, mustered up some energy and my 6 year old boy to head out later and managed to find:

- Oil and Vinegar Cruets by Wheaton Glass (Fused together, funny that.)

- Couroc Tray (Honoring the First Presbyterian Church in Monterey, CA 1883 - 1983. Almost left it, then changed my mind.)
- Dorothy Thorpe Silver and Glass Tray (Pretty awesome I think with original stickers and label still on the bottom.)
- Heller Cups and Bowls
- Two Panels of 1960s Marimekko (Yes!)
- Mexican Sterling Silver Utensils Set (My "Should I, Shouldn't I" item for this week. Box has a distinctive mark: "Plata Moderna Mexico 925 Sterling." Love the style and can't wait to see what they look like all shined up.)
- Paden City Teapot (I believe it's from the Greenbriar/Greenbrier line from the 1950s.)
- And lastly, a Figgjo lid. Yep, a lid. What was I thinking?

All but the cruets were found past noon. Goes to show the early birds don't get ALL the worms.

Of course the boy was the best partner ever, always is. He was duly rewarded with a toy helicopter and a recorder, and was even so considerate to pick out a flashlight and yet another recorder for his little sister. A 3 year old and a 6 year old marching around the house all afternoon with recorders they don't really know how to play. Again, what was I thinking? Did someone say wine?

the mystery of the electric ladybug

Here are your clues:

Clue #1: It's a metal ladybug. It's heavy. 6" long, 5" wide, 3" high.

It has a cord. A really short cord. 6" long. When you plug it in...

...that metal circle with a square-shaped hole in it spins slowwwwwly while making a nice quiet grinding hum. Like something else would attach to it and turn? (So, there's a motor inside.)
See those metal things on either side that make it seem like it would slide onto something?

Do Not Expose To Rain (Ne Pas Exposer A La Pluie)
Researched the company and Electrohome made crazy funky TV/Stereo consoles in the 1950s and 60s , among other things, and then started making outdoor accessories later.
Oh, also says "Made in Korea" under that bottom emblem.

And that's what I know about this Electric Ladybug.

So, whaddya think? Anyone? Someone out there knows EXACTLY what this baby is, and I want to know!! Help a girl out and let me know, ask around, share the photo, whatever it takes.

little clown

An update on that cute little clown bank that I found last weekend... He shined up quite nicely and has just a couple tiny "dings." It does have the original screw to hold the two pieces together, even though it's not pictured here. One thing I really like about it is that the bottom is weighted to give the clown an almost Roly-Poly feel.

Did a bit of research and it's made by Raimond. It was actually marked, but I hadn't noticed previously.

There are several of these out there on Ebay and Etsy, so not a super rare or valuable item, selling anywhere from $11 - $26. From the 1960s, most likely intended as a baby gift. I've had some stainless serving pieces marked "Raimond Denmark" in the past and I found some items online labeled "Raimond Made in England." So, not 100% sure about company location or history.

I just love his expression and the details on his face. In the shop soon...

stock up saturday: yellows and blues

So, since starting my stock-up-saturdays posts, I've noticed that the purchases seem to "go" together aesthetically. Not every piece, but when I place them on my table to take a photo, I'm struck each week at how nicely they fit together as a little grouping. Interesting, I think. I wonder why? Does this happen to you?

Seems like yellows and blues are the thing this week:

My camera focused funny in the dim Saturday evening light. Sorry for the not-so-crispy image. Here's what I rounded up today:
- Tensor mod "eyeball" lamp (I'm excited to see how this one cleans up.)
- Awesome set of four mint 70s stoneware mugs (Japan I assume...and what IS with all the mugs lately?)
- Gemco giant cream and sugar set in the Pyrex "Butterfly Gold" Pattern (What was that I said about C & S sets last week?)
- Heller glass canister (Gathering up a little collection here...to sell or keep, such a dilemma.)
- Metlox oval bowl (Has a really pretty, almost periwinkle, interior glaze.)
- Copenhagen Porcelain B&G Mors Dag 1974 commemorative plate (Mother's Day...adorable little polar bear cubs snuggling/suckling up to mama bear.)
- Silver clown bank

In my October 1 post, I showed a little wooden humidor I came across. It turned out to be a bit of a treasure, one of those "Should I, Shouldn't I?" moments. Just posting on this blog generated a bit of interest I wasn't prepared for. It turned out to be a highly collectible piece designed by Jean Gillon for Wood Art -made in Brazil in the 1960s. I ended up selling it on Ebay because I wasn't sure how to price it. I'll do a little feature post on it someday.

I don't want to get into the purchase price vs. sale price thing, but I always love that sense of following your gut feeling when treasure-hunting, that feeling of intrigue you get when you find something that seems like it might be something special, but it might very well be not so special. Thought it might be fun to highlight these experiences when they come along...the successes and failures...to provide perhaps some information, or maybe just a good laugh at my expense! :)

This week, the little clown coin bank was my "Should I, Shouldn't I?" purchase... I'll keep you posted!

Some weekend finds to continue the stock-up-the-shop efforts:

- Ben Seibel Iroquois Impromptu "El Camino" small pitcher/creamer
- Arabia "Oliivi" 8 cups and saucers (Designed by Ulla Procope in the 1960s. Perfect condition.)
- Denby England "Gypsy" platter (70s-80s)
- Large stoneware shakers (Made in Japan, have handles that are a bit hidden.)
- Stainless cream and sugar set (I try not to buy C & S sets, because I really don't think people use them so much anymore, but I really like the shape of these.)

And one more funny little addition:

How fun are these? Friehof Jagertee is an Austrian alcoholic beverage "punch," to be heated and served to hunters, hikers, skiers...after a long day in the alps. :) Doesn't that sound lovely? They definitely feel Christmas-y to me. These mugs must have been a promotional item. I love the graphics, colors, and the vintage nordic ski vibe - the boots, poles, skis, sweaters and hats.

Having a ski-fanatic-Norwegian-blooded husband who did the longer-than-average ski "bum" thing in Vail, then living in our turn-of-the century log cabin at 8,500 feet for 8 years with said husband here in Colorado, and just being a winter-loving Wisconsin-born girl all contribute to my love of all things alpine. These mugs get me excited to practice my measly skiing skills this winter, learning along with my 3 and 6 year-old, and then be rewarded with a warm drink in a cozy mountain lodge. Here's to winter!

As I get more and more selective about what I bring home for the shop, my "hauls" have been smaller lately. But then I have days like today (and last week) where I end up with more things than I should. But, hey, it's good stuff!

Have a look:

- Couroc Tray (With French wedge of cheese and Gouda images, and an attached wooden cutting board!)
- Resin Tray with Swiss Fondue Bourguignonne Instructions (Cute old-timey instructions for this type of meat fondue.)
- Heller Glass Containers (I dream of a huge collection of these to store bulk items in my dream kitchen. Gotta get that dream kitchen, first.)
- Georges Briard Butterfly Glasses (A little worn, but so fun.)
- Johnson Brothers Cups and Saucers set of 6 (1980s "Eaton" pattern.)
- Pyrex cast iron warmer (With spot for a votive.)
- Coors Porcelain Co. evaporating dish (Amazing labware from the 1920s.)
- Electric Ladybug (Yes, electric. Plug it in and it buzzes. Made by a company which made outdoor accessories. So mysterious. I have no idea what it is or what it's for but I totally love it and if anyone has any insights to this, I welcome it. If not, for now, it's an electric ladybug.)

Thought I'd join in the treasure-hunt-sharing trend and start posting some of my finds from the weekends. I love seeing the things that other people find, so what the heck...maybe someone wants to see my scores! I know I'm always excited about them! My husband might just appreciate not being the only one who has to see show and tell each weekend.

I'm usually up and out on Saturday mornings, enjoying some much-needed alone time after a busy week of teaching elementary schoolers and being a mom of two, hitting a few favorite local thrift shops and also estate and garage sales. Some days, like today, I'm up and out before anyone is even awake.

So here's my Stock-Up Saturday:
- Dorothy Thorpe punch bowl (Pretty sure it's the real deal.)
- Dansk Tiny Tapers
- Pyrex blue snowflake bowl (I still can't resist some Pyrex now and then.)
- Arcopal France mushroom mug
- Pottery Craft Vino set (Decanter and four cups.)
- Made in Japan stainless and wood fish bottle opener (Husband may not let this go, sorry folks...we'll see.)
- Le Grand Tetras canteen France (I've never hiked with wine, but this might be the perfect excuse to start.)
- Cute little wooden bucket with "locking" lid and cork interior. (Came home and realized it's actually a little humidor for storing loose tobacco...strong smell of pipe tobacco. Hmmm. I like it, BUT...)
- Cattail wall hangings

Think I'll join in the fun over Her Library Adventures' Flea Market Finds on Sundays and Apron Thrift Girl's Thrift Share Mondays. Seems like a great way to get the blog up and going again!

Most of the things pictured here will end up in the creekhouse Etsy shop... I've gotten wayyyyy behind in listing so hopefully this weekend all of this, and more, will be in the shop.

staffordshire potteries mugs

I see these fun, funky, retro mugs popping up here and there and decided to learn about them and look for them a bit. Staffordshire Potteries Limited, from England, started producing cups and dinnerware in the 50s. In the 1960s and 1970s they put their efforts into mugs, also introducing the "Kilnkraft" line in 1972. I love the simple graphics and whimsical colors.

diggin' digsmed

Recently came upon a sweet stash of Danish goodies at my favorite little thrift shop. I'd been curious about Digsmed items, and lo and behold, there they were. Isn't it funny how that happens? I can't find much information on the Digsmed company at this point, but I love the style and the clear smokey gray pieces that compliment the teak. The covered cheese board below is marked Digsmed Danmark, and is missing the original knife.

The Lazy Susan (Am I supposed to capitalize Lazy Susan? It doesn't look right with just "Susan" capitalized, and it doesn't look right with "susan" un-capitalized either.) Anyway, the lazy Susan (see?) is not marked, but the little glass gray dishes lead me to believe it's Digsmed. Even if not, it's a lovely piece!

oh mexico

We took a trip to Mexico two weeks ago, just the four of us, right after school ended here in Colorado. We went easy and relatively cheap...an all inclusive resort in Cancun. The intent was family time, beach time, rest, and relaxation. We definitely succeeded with that! It was beautiful, and since we rarely take such vacations...we cherished every moment. I did an especially good job cherishing, if I do say so myself.

I did have a desire to go hunting for some vintage Mexican treasures or fabrics for sewing. I definitely did NOT succeed with that part. It was far too taxing for me to put my drink down and get my - ahem- out of my beach chair to go exploring.

So, funny thing, after we got back I hit some estate sales. One of which was a retired teacher (Really? Will I actually retire some day?!) She had traveled to Mexico in the 60s and 70s and had purchased some fabric trim for sewing projects. Funny thing.

Needless to say, I quickly scooped it up to buy...feeling a twinge of guilt that I hadn't put that drink down and done at least a little bit of exploring while I myself was south of the border. (Yes, I know, south of the border is much different now than it was in the 60s and 70s, but let's just keep that romantic vision in our minds for a few moments.)

She had all sorts of souvenirs from her travels all over the world. She was selling her old camera straps, which yes, I also quickly scooped up to buy.

Don't they just make you wonder? Where all has she been? Did she travel alone, take her children, her husband? Did she do this traveling during her precious teacher summers? Does she still have all the pictures she took? She was such a sweet lady...a junior high science teacher. Selling all her belongings, moving out of her home, her adult children helping at the sale, no husband anymore. Hmpf.

I think next time, I'll get up and go exploring a bit...but this was pretty fun too.

bennington potters

Well since that last post, I've become completely obsessed with California pottery and now I've obtained even more. But more on that later. How 'bout a bit of Bennington? This Vermont pottery is very popular with collectors. Some I like, and some I don't.
I love this one:

It's a large roaster, big enough for a chicken or a bit ol' hunk of meat. Found it at the thrift for $6 and it's all for me. It's quite brilliant in it's simplicity (which we always love) because the lid can slide side to side, but catches on the little mini speed bumps in order to safely release the hot steam. The lid can also be used as a divided serving tray or as an actual carving tray, allowing the juices to drizzle down into the sections. See? Brilliant!

Some other pieces I came across recently:

a small batter bowl...so pretty

And here are some shots of their backstamps. Interesting because the number represent models, not years, and the models were used over and over again. This makes it hard to really accurately date Bennington pieces.
One thing that I love, that I just learned, is about the symbol you can see on the third photo below. The designer, David Gil (whose initials are on the 2nd picture below,) came up with the symbol of an arm and a hand, representing the physical craft of creating pottery. At the top of the arm is a little star which represents the "spark" of imagination also required to create. How cool! Some of the pieces started to be too small to include the whole arm, so often all you see is the "spark."

It's so fun to think about what it must have been like in California in the 1950s and 60s and even back to the 30s and 40s. A piece of this history is the pottery that was being produced in studios and commercially at the time. Such style...reminiscent of the beach and innovative, laid-back western lifestyle.

I'm becoming more familiar names like Vernon, Franciscan, Metlox, Bauer, Gladding McBean, Heath, etc. There's much more for me to learn, and there are many experts out there. Vernonware is popular because of its great quality and California style of course, but also because its "Raffia" pattern has been featured in the Mad Men kitchen:

Here are some Vernon finds I've come across lately:

1960s - 1980s

Metlox is the umbrella company for Vernon, Poppytrail, and anything referred to as "Prouty." Prouty was the name of the founding family. These amazing early 1930s grill plates were from the early years of Metlox. Look at the cool back stamp!

My grandmother had this "Vineyard" pattern and we always kind of joked about them, us little girls thinking they were so ugly. Then they sat for years and years in my parents' garage...Mom often tried to talk us into taking "Grandmommy's grape dishes." Did she end up getting rid of them? I'm afraid to ask now! Even though I still don't totally love the pattern, it would be nice to have them as a keepsake.

And finally, I found a couple of these cute little orange bowls. Not marked anything fancy. just "Calif USA L73." Don't know what that means (someone out there probably does,) but they're darn pretty and soooo California, huh?

atomic goodness

At the funniest little estate/garage sale in Boulder a few weeks ago, I picked up this somewhat random set of very atomic-looking china. It was dirty and full of bugs, as if it had been sitting in a milk crate in the back yard for a few seasons.

Amazingly enough, after bargaining with guy for way too long (suddenly it was important to him, very rare and special china...uh huh...this is how you take care of your rare, special things Mister?) I took it home, cleaned it up, and it's basically in mint condition. Not a knife scratch or sign of any usage.

I couldn't find out the name of the pattern, despite my best online efforts and even contacting some folks, but I do know from the stamp that it's Mayer China from the 1960s.

I don't know, something about it just kind of takes my breath away. I'm a sucker for the great feeling of diner/restaurantware china. I can just imagine the diner, the counter, the people using these dishes.

la solana

Picked these up the other day.

I really wasn't sure what they were or how old they were. They were unmarked, but I was sure I loved them! It was one of those should-I-shouldn't-I moments. The seemed something special; heavy, smooth, very well made. The semi-matte glaze is like butta...and check out the handles!

I started researching them (oh I love the research process.) I learned that they are La Solana pottery. Ever heard of it? Well, I hadn't.
La Solana started in California in 1946 and by 1954 the business was relocated in Scottsdale, Arizona. There is no particular artist credited with the styles, as far as I can find. I've found La Solana items around on Etsy and Ebay and such. It's too bad there's not more info out there...it's just lovely!

Apparently, most La Solana is unmarked, with a few exceptions. A very few have an impressed stamp, and more commonly found is the gold sticker.

the storm before the calm

Haven't had too many inspirations or time for projects lately. We're heading into the last 6 weeks of school year and things get SO crazy in the school calendar. Egads, I've got so much to do...it almost puts me in a panic just thinking about it. "The Storm Before The Calm" I always call it. Soon enough I'll be heading into my beloved teacher summer and getting that sewing machine humming again. Can't wait!

By the way, if any of you are interested, Rae is hosting her Spring Top Sewalong again this year. It's such fun to participate, or just to spectate. I don't think I'll be taking part this year, but I'll certainly be watching for inspirations. vintage fabric finds

Came across some vintage fabrics lately...certainly not an expert, but definitely a fan:

This one is HUGE, like 4 yards huge.The selvedge is marked "DeSoto Handprint" which from my research dates it to the 1960s when United DeSoto (fomerly United Wallpaper) launched lines of big, bold wallpaper patterns with intense colors...and also produced some coordinating home dec fabric. So psychedelic, so pop, so '60s!

Again with the '60s...This vintage 1960s Loomskill fabric has amazing design and colors. Swirly paisley and flowers in shades of olive, eggplant, rust, and gold. This is a large piece - 45" wide by 98" long (2.6 yards long.) It has a heavy, lineny, textured feel to it. There is a light sheen to it, so possibly a touch of acrylic within the cotton? Not "shiny" by any means, in fact at first touch I thought 100% cotton.

This flat Marimekko sheet is a "double" size, measuring 94" long by 79" wide. It has a cool 80s mesh design in red, yellow, blue and black, with a nice twill binding across the top edge. One tag is marked Marimekko 1987 (see photo) and the other, much more faded tag, says Marimekko by Dan River. It is a 50% cotton 50% polyester blend. Definitely has been washed and used, but is in great condition with no stains or tears. I have a set of about the same vintage Marimekko sheets from high school. Soooo tempted to dig them out.

Marked on the selvedge "creation GIVENCHY PARIS," this fabric is 102" long (just under 3 yards) and 52" wide. I have researched this fabric and have had difficulty finding any information. A trusted resource has suggested it could be an original from the 70s or 80s, or it could be reproduction of an original vintage Givenchy textile? Either way, how could I possibly pass it up?! Still looking for any info on this...

mixer bowls

Still along the lines of the last vintage Pyrex post, these old bowls from stand up mixers are so sturdy and stylish. The first picture is vintage Pyrex, made for Hamilton Beach mixers. I love the milky glass, ribbed sides, and little spouts. The second one is really big and SO heavy. That, too, has the ribbed sides and also kind of a cool non-slip nubby surface around the bottom edge.

It's too bad the original mixers didn't come along with the bowls. I just did a search on Google Images for "vintage mixers" and there are so many fun ones out there to look at. Makes me want one on my kitchen counter, but I that would mean I'd have to cook...

vintage pyrex

I go back and forth with my feelings about vintage Pyrex. I tell myself that I'm not going to buy any more, but then I see it here and there and can't resist it's cute, vintage nature and style.

It harkens back (is harken a word?) to a simpler time, which seems to be a familiar theme around here.The blog Pyrex Love is a great resource for researching vintage Pyrex. I've at least gotten to the point where I'll only grab something if it's in nearly mint condition and super useful. Those divided casserole dishes - what in the world did people use them for? Here are some of my finds. Some are for sale, some are sold, and some are mine all mine.

This caught my eye as I was treasure hunting the other day.

Something about that signature took me back to my childhood.

I'm sure we had something in our house by Marushka, but I have yet to chat with my mom about it. In the meantime, I've done some research on the subject. These Marushka prints were very popular in the 1970s. They are clearly inspired by Marimekko and Tampella and such, but many have this cool woodland vibe, featuring various birds and trees. Plus there are skiers, canoes, sailboats, etc. So Midwestern...which makes sense because they're based in Grand Island, Michigan.

vintage tampella fabric wall art

I bought this 1970s vintage Finnish Tampella fabric from Etsy. I couldn't resist the seagulls, the colors, the style. I saw it, loved it, bought it, then there it sat...and sat...and sat.

In a flash of inspiration I decided it needed to be on my wall. After searching for a tutorial on You Tube, I found this. It's a pretty basic idea, but nice to have a bit of instruction to make sure it would be successful!

Instead of a frame, I used a stretched canvas from JoAnn (with a 50% off coupon that I could actually use because it was full price...possibly the first time I actually found value with JoAnn's coupon scheme. Victory!)

I love it so much...even though I did notice some slight discoloration on one of the seagulls after it was hung. Hmpf. Do I dare take it all off to gently wash it? Ohhhh, man I don't know. For now I'll leave as is and love it as is.

What a great way to use a special piece of fabric! Try it, it's easy!

I searched high and low (well, on the internet of course) for any information on this name. All I could come up with was lots of information about this company. Could it be the same? I can't be sure, but I can be sure that there isn't anything out there (well, on the internet of course) about Duplan Prints, Duplan Fabric, Duplan Clothing, nada. It's so cool, I almost feel that it's pretty early polyester. It has such an art deco feel to me. Anyway, had to share and 'fess up to not being such a cotton snob this week.

I've long been a big fan of the Finnish textile company Marimekko. Yes, largely due to the influence of the good taste of my Danish-born friend since 2nd grade (are you reading?)

I was thrilled to find this fabric recently, and more thrilled to be able to sell it to someone who appreciates it greatly. Yes, it was one of those "gasp!" moments when I found it, but the extremely large scale of it stumped me. The colors and even the style would actually work with my decor, but the sheer hugeness? I'd need some seriously high walls or something.

Orange, rich red, and navy. What a great combination.

45 year old fabric in almost mint condition. How cool is that? Here is an excerpt from a book titled Marimekko: fabrics, fashion, architecture by Marianne Aav. Have not seen the book in person, but I really enjoyed seeing the photo of this fabric in its day, in use.

surf's up toddler skirt tutorial

We have dreams in this house of learning how to surf. The kids put couch pillows on the floor, stand on them, and dramatically waver back and forth, "whooooa, whoaaaa, whoa!" The kids' movie Surf's Up is hilarious and is quite a favorite around here lately.

I can't give a tutorial on how to surf, but how about one to make a cute little surfer-girl skirt out of surfer-girl's older brother's surf shirt?! Super quick and easy, literally 20 minutes if you have the stuff. And this is what you need:

1 boy's surfer shirt with (this is important:) a straight, 1" hem. (Yes, you can do it with a curved, skinnier hem, but then it won't be quite so quick! The bottom hem ends up being the waistline...I'll address a complication about this later, you've probably already figured that out...I'm a little slow.)

3/4" - 1" elastic

The photos are pretty self-explanatory, but I'll add some comments along the way to clarify. Oh, cool buttons really help the skirt look extra cute. And, ummmm, sizing...I cut up my little boy's size 5 shirt to fit my 2 year old little girl. Good enough? I thought so...it's elastic!

Hem the edge you just cut (this will be the BOTTOM hem of the skirt.)

Thread your elastic through the original bottom hem of the shirt, this will be your waistband. Now might be a good time to grab that toddler and wrestle her down to make sure your making the waistband just the right size.

Now to address the aforementioned complication...yes, the print is upside-down. You probably saw this coming. I don't really worry myself too much about these things (clearly,) but the more I looked at various Hawaiian prints, I've realized that many have pictures going both ways. It still looks ridiculously cute, and you'll see another at the end in which the print can go either way.

I pinned the elastic in place, overlapping, and then sewed a square to hold it securely before I trimmed the excess elastic. See the square at the top above the buttons?

You may think this is just a grand effort to show off this adorable 2 year old belly, and maybe it is.

Try it, it's easy! (Oh, and if you don't have an older brother, just head to the thrift shop and you'll have your choice of all sorts of awesome prints. Maybe some nice plaids...doesn't matter if they're upside-down or not!)

the thrill of the hunt

I've always loved vintage "stuff"... including vintage fabrics and linens. I'm no expert on vintage fabrics, but I am very intrigued by them and very much enjoy shopping for them. I'm not talking about shopping online or at actual fabric stores, but hunting through antique malls, thrift shops, flea markets, estate sales...to find fun treasures hidden in the corners and piles. The last time I went out, I took little boy with me. I now have him well-trained in the art of fabric hunting..."Mommy, this looks old!" "Mommy, do you think this is pretty?" "Oh Mommy, look how beee-eautiful this one is!" Needless to say, much of what he finds does not find its way into my shopping bag, but we sure do have fun together.

Check out this fun 1970s apron with teapots, houses, doors, and flowers in great 70s colors.

This is an amazing Lanz Original fabric from the 1950s. It is a really beautiful representation of Little Red Riding Hood. Just over 4 yards of this!

Beautiful blues, stripes, and tiny flowers on this one. It's a lightweight cotton.

Something about it, I just love looking at it.

This is a cute Scandinavian print. Such pretty colors and a cute design. It has definitely never been used or washed. I can just see it as kitchen curtains or a tablecloth...

or maybe even a panel in a little girl's skirt or dress!

Because I unfortunately don't have the time or energy to sew with all of these, many of these fabrics, and more to come, will be for sale at the creekhouse Etsy shop along with my other vintage finds. I sure wish I could keep all the things I find. I'm looking forward to learning more about vintage fabrics and sharing my new knowledge here!

I think I'll go back and press all the seams just to crisp it up a bit.

But I also like the wrinkly-unkemptness of the linen.

Great thing is that it all comes off in one piece to pop in the washer and dryer and pop it back on.

Anna Maria Horner meets toddler proofing

I recently obtained 4 chairs from a local thrift shop. They match my table, which I haven't been loving, but now that there's a 'set'...it's beginning to grow on me. They really are in good condition considering the $4.99 price. The cushion covers, as you can see, not so great. I put up with them for a bit, thinking "What the heck - our messy family is going to eat in these chairs...I'll leave them as-is and feel proud."

Well, cut to a few months later with a squirmy five year old and downright wacky almost-two-year old who likes to eat yogurt with her fingers...and we've got some nast-eeeeee chair cushions.

Hello, day shopping ALONE in Denver (happy b-day to me) and coming across a fabric store I had dreamed of visiting. Hello, stumbling across a corner bin containing Anna Maria Horner's Little Folks Forest Hills Oil Cloth. Hello, brain engaged enough from having a shopping day to myself that I actually could think of the project I had been meaning to do...with this particular oil cloth! Hello, beautiful, fun, funky, toddler-proof new chairs!

Soon to be finished this weekend. Excited about getting it all done!

I have a project list, and it's slowly getting crossed off. Loving that.

Oh, and any of you out there who may be reading...I highly suggest a day shopping alone in the city. Inspiring, motivating, re-energizing.

Are you having flashbacks to the 70s when you read that phrase? I sure did when I found this fabric last week at a thrift shop. I've always had a thing for Smokey, and was tickled when I found these curtains.

I tried to research to find what year they are from 'cause I hate to call things vintage if they're not really. They are made by Fieldcrest, and the only thing I could find online was this funny little article from 1972. (I love you, internet.) I think I can safely assume that they are from 1972, which I would consider vintage; I was just one year old...so yes, definitely vintage. Looking at the style, colors, and pictures, that sounds about right to me.

I know that was a lot of photos with very cheesey captions, but every time I looked I found another very clever cute little thing.

They are two large, lined curtains, about 2 yards wide by 1.5 yards high, and the fabric is nice heavyweight. Question is...what to do with them? They'd be cute curtains as is for little boy's room...or maybe for a play room...or maybe made into...hmmm...I just don't know. For now they're going to sit, draped over my living room chair to make me smile every time I walk by.

Maybe something this weekend will remind you of your childhood...decorated bikes, ooohs and ahhhs, the smell of fireworks, root beer floats...can't wait to see little boy experience his first sparklers tomorrow. You get the picture. As soon as I get the suitcases unpacked and get caught up on my sleep after traveling with two little ones (hubby didn't get to come this time,) I'll be back at it.
